High School Rugby Begins!

West Ottowa at Penn Invite in Elkhart, IN - March 2012

It is spring in Michigan, which means the start of the High School Rugby season!  The first games are being played this week for both the boys and girls high school leagues.  The Boys High School League is split into the East and West, each with Division I, Division II, and Division III for a total of about 30 teams.  Some programs are large enough to have A, B, and C sides that play competitively in their respective Divisions.  The Girls High School League only has one Division with a total of about 14 teams.

Teams will compete in the regular season for league points, which will determine the seeding for playoffs for the State Championships in May.  This is a new system modeled after the IRB point system:

  • Win = 4 points, Tie = 2 points, Lose = 0 points
  • Bonus Points: 1 point for scoring 4 or more tries, 1 point for losing by 7 points or less
With this new league point system, the playoff seeding will be determined by the top 8 teams in each division.  Let the games begin!
