Level 1 Referee Course a Success

Referee Materials

Referee Resources and Materials

Saturday’s a…Rugby Referee Clinic Day!  On Saturday, March 10, 2012 a Level 1 Officiating Course was held at Kinewa Middle School in Okemos, MI.  The course began at 8AM and ran until 4PM and it was taught by Tom Feeny and Kevin Wornham of the Michigan Rugby Referee Society (MiRRS).

Out of the 14 people who attended the course, there was a variety of rugby backgrounds including former players, high school coaches, current men’s collegiate players from Michigan State University and Saginaw Valley, and current club players from the Detroit Women’s club.  Course attendees all received various referee resources, including the 2012 IRB Law Book, a USA Rugby whistle, yellow and red cards, and other IRB officiating guidebooks.

The course included informational classroom sessions, practical sessions in the gym, and a short quiz.  During the classroom sessions, participants completed the four learning modules: game knowledge, management, planning, and technical.  Participants were able to take turns being a  referee while the other participants engaged in a phase play rugby which quickly turned into a live match of full contact rugby.

Thanks to everyone who attended the clinic, and special thanks to Jim Clawson for arranging the clinic and also thanks to the course leaders and ref coaches Tom Feeny and Kevin Wornham.  See you on the pitch!
